Teatro Milagro’s new work, ZAPATISTA, shares the struggle of the man behind the mask, Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos of the Zapatista National Liberation Army.  Join us on the intriguing journey exploring the myth behind the man who, in his fight for human rights, proves that the spoken word is a powerful implement for social change.  ZAPATISTA opens at El Centro Milagro, in Portland, Oregon on January 11, 2008, before beginning its national tour in February that will continue through November of 2008.

From the mountains of Mexico’s southeast, a small band of Zapatistas made their first strike at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, 1994.  With the help of the Internet, news media and hundreds of international NGOs, their struggle still continues for indigenous rights, territorial rights, women’s rights, everything for every oppressed group that is willing to stand up for their beliefs.  “I am Mayan in San Cristobal, gay in San Francisco, black in South Africa — any human being in this world who is exploited, marginalized and oppressed, resisting and saying enough! ¡Ya basta!”

In this exciting new work, Gilberto Martin del Campo, one of Portland’s most favorite actors, will play the role of Marcos.  Omar Vargas, 8-year veteran of the Milagro troupe, plays the role of his principal Mayan cultural advisor, Don Antonio.  Jorge Madrid, from Miracle’s Teatro Español Company, plays the role of the Zapatista leader Comandante Tacho.  Dañel Malan, company Artistic Director, plays Comandante Ana Maria and the surreal role of the tree, Madre Ceiba.  Direction is by Seattle theatre veteran Laurel Pilar Garcia, known for her work at the Intiman Theatre.  Milagro’s signature mural will be designed and painted by Jesus Kobe.

PUENTES residencies will be an integral part of the tour, creating social justice theatre.  In addition to a free study guide, a teacher workbook of bilingual theatre, writing and visual arts exercises is available for purchase as part of Milagro’s BEAT (Bilingual Educator Art Training) program

El nuevo trabajo del Teatro Milagro, ZAPATISTA, comparte la lucha del hombre tras la máscara, el Insurgente Subcomandante Marcos del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional.  Unasenos en este fascinante viaje que explora el mito que sigue al hombre, que en su lucha por los derechos humanos, nos muestra que la palabra es una poderosa herramienta para el cambio social.  ZAPATISTA se estrenará en el Centro Milagro en Portland, Oregon el 11 de enero del 2008, antes de comenzar con la gira nacional que continuará hasta noviembre.

Desde las montañas de sureste de México, un pequeño grupo de Zapatistas realiza su primer ataque justo a la media noche al fin de año en 1994.  Con la ayuda del Internet, los medios de prensa y cientos de organizaciones no gubernamentales, su lucha continua por los derechos de los indígenas, derechos territoriales, derechos de la mujer, todos los grupos que son oprimidos y están dispuestos a levantarse por sus creencias.  “Soy Maya en San Cristóbal, gay en San Francisco, negro en Sur Africa — cualquier ser humano en este mundo que es explotado, marginado y oprimido, que resiste y que dice basta. ¡Ya basta!” 

En este nuevo emocionante trabajo Gilberto Martín del Campo, uno de los actores favoritos de Portland, estará en el papel de Marcos.  Omar Vargas, que ya tiene 8 años con la compañía, estará en el papel de consejero Maya, Don Antonio.  Jorge Madrid, actor de Teatro Español presentará estará en el papel del líder Zapatista  Comandante Tacho.  Dañel Malan, Directora Artística de esta compañía será la Comandante Ana Maria y también el surrealista personaje de Madre Ceiba.  La dirección estará a cargo de la experimentada Laurel Pilar Garcia, reconocida por su trabajo con el Intiman Theatre.  El telón de fondo será diseñado y pintado por Jesus Kobe.

Las residencias de PUENTES serán una parte integral de la gira, con la creación de teatro de justicia social.  Además de la guía de estudio gratuita, un manual bilingüe para maestros sobre teatro, ejercicios de escritura y artes visuales están disponibles para la compra como parte del programa del Milagro BEAT (Entrenamiento de arte para educadores bilingües)
