Teatro Milagro begins its fall tour of ZAPATISTA with a performance for Casa Latina Cultural Center in Macomb, Illinois.  This will be the 4th year the group has performed for Casa Latina.  See Milagro’s fall tour schedule for additional venues in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Texas.  

ZAPATISTA is the story of Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos and the Zapatista National Liberation Army.  This intriguing tale shares the struggles and successes of the man behind the mask who, in his fight for human rights, proves that the spoken word is a powerful implement for social change. 

From the mountains of Mexico’s southeast, a small band of Zapatistas made their first strike at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, 1994.  With the help of the Internet, news media and hundreds of international NGOs, their struggle still continues for indigenous rights, territorial rights, women’s rights, everything for every oppressed group that is willing to stand up for their beliefs.  “I am Mayan in San Cristobal, gay in San Francisco, black in South Africa — any human being in this world who is exploited, marginalized and oppressed, resisting and saying enough! ¡Ya basta!”

In this compelling new work, CarlosAlexis Cruz of Puerto Rico plays the role of Marcos.  Omar Vargas of Ecuador and 8-year veteran of the Milagro troupe, plays the role of his principal Mayan cultural advisor, Don Antonio.  Jorge Madrid, from Honduras, plays the role of the Zapatista leader Comandante Tacho.  Dañel Malan, company Artistic Director, plays Capitana Ana Maria.  Milagro’s signature mural is designed and painted by Jesus Kobe from Oaxaca.

PUENTES residencies will be an integral part of the tour, creating social justice theatre.  In addition to a free study guide, a teacher workbook of bilingual theatre, writing and visual arts exercises is available for purchase as part of Milagro’s BEAT (Bilingual Educator Art Training) program

ZAPATISTA es la historia del Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos y el del Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional.  Esta interesante historia comparte esta lucha y el éxito del hombre detrás de la máscara, quien en su lucha por los derechos humanos, nos muestra que la palabra es una poderosa herramienta para el cambio social. 

Desde las montañas del sureste de México, un pequeño grupo de Zapatistas realiza su primer ataque justo a la media noche del fin de año en 1994.  Su lucha continúa con la ayuda del Internet, los medios de prensa y cientos de organizaciones no gubernamentales, por los derechos de los indígenas, de la mujer, territoriales, y por todos los grupos que son oprimidos y están dispuestos a revelarse por sus derechos.  “Soy Maya en San Cristóbal, gay en San Francisco, negro en Sur Africa — cualquier ser humano en este mundo que es explotado, marginado y oprimido, que resiste y que dice basta. ¡Ya basta!” 

En este poderoso nuevo trabajo, CarlosAlexis Cruz de Puerto Rico tiene elpapel de Marcos.  Omar Vargas de Ecuador y con 8 años en el Milagro, tiene el papel de Don Antonio un consejero de la cultura Maya.  Jorge Madrid, de Honduras, tiene el papel del líder Zapatista Comandante Tacho.  Dañel Malan, Director Artística de la compañía, interpreta a la Capitana Ana María.  El mural representativo del Milagro fue diseñado y pintado por Jesús Kobe de Oaxaca.

Las residencias de PUENTES serán una parte integral de la gira, con la creación de teatro de justicia social.  Además de la guía de estudio gratuita, un manual bilingüe para maestros sobre teatro, ejercicios de escritura y artes visuales están disponibles para la compra como parte del programa del Milagro BEAT (Entrenamiento de arte para educadores bilingües)
