Every fall, the dead are commemorated in a lively show of dance, music and theatre in Portland’s longest-running Day of the Dead celebration. This year, our signature carpa — that wildly popular and irreverent vaudeville — marches to the beat of a new drummer as a folkloric master makes way for the rise of his hip-hop apprentice, el nuevo maestro. dangerous and self-serving. But when knowledge is grounded in tradition, the conduit of knowledge, the apprentice, becomes part of a continuum contributing to our culture and our way of life. Only then does our apprentice become a master, and able to pass knowledge to the next generation, creating legacy. I hope our show contributes to keeping the traditions of los muertos vibrant and to the joyous legacy of Miracle Theatre.
